Blog Post 1 (The Philosopher King to The Rationalist, and Your Life)

Ø  Is it better to have pleasure when we desire instead of waiting tomorrow? According to Aristippus, I believe it is better to have pleasure when we desire because we do know if it will be the same when we have it.  We need to live the present and not think about tomorrow since we do not know if tomorrow might come or not. You never know what will happen tomorrow.Only physical pleasure makes life exciting, dynamic, worth living. Not only that, but actual pleasures of the moment are much more desirable than are potential pleasures that might (or might not) occur in the future. In the first place, we are certain only of the present; the future might not even come. And besides, things may be different for us in the future.” (Section 7-1a)

Ø  There are many examples that can clearly illustrate my answer to my question.  An example is:  An individual name Kevin would really want to go snowboarding today on his day off.  Today is snowing; he wouldn’t have another day off until two weeks from now. Within two weeks there will be no more snow for Kevin can go snowboarding. Tomorrow the individual would have to go to work. Kevin should go snowboarding because it is something he desires and enjoys doing. Kevin, will not be able to go snowboarding tomorrow because he will have to attend work or you do not know what will happen tomorrow. Anything can happen like an accident. This example show how we should do thing when we desire and live our present. Doing what we enjoy would make us feel good and be happy.

Ø  The example provide it clearly illustrates what Aristippus means, that pleasure desire at the moment it much better than future pleasure because we do not know how our future looks like or if the future might occur.  As in the example, Kevin will have to attend work the next day or any accident can occur tomorrow. We do not have control over our future or what will happen. Therefore, going snowboarding when he desire will give him pleasure by doing what he enjoys at the moment.

Ø  In conclusion, I believe life that the meaning of life is pleasure and it’s better to have pleasure when we desire.  It is better this way because like I said before we do not know if the future will occur or not. Also, having pleasure when we desire will make us feel good and we will be happy. “Any distinction between good and bad pleasures was as absurd and contradictory as distinguishing between good and bad sins or good and bad virtues. The only difference among pleasures is their intensity: Whatever pleases me most at the moment is the highest good there can be. No pleasure can be “sick” in such a value system. No enjoyment can be wrong. No passion is evil in itself. Only loss of self-control that leads to less pleasure is wrong.” (Section7-1a)

Spelling errors: I did not find any spelling errors in this blog posting.

Grammar errors: I found one major grammar error one in the third paragraph. There were a few minor comma placements but nothing drastic needed editing. “The example provides a clear illustration of what Aristippus means that pleasure our desire at the moment is much better than future pleasure because we do not know how our future looks like or if the future might occur.” This is a run on sentence.
Lack of clarity: The author has some areas that need a little more clarity. The message is correct and I can understand what the author is trying to say. However, the wording makes it unclear at times and difficult to read. With some rearranging and change in sentence structure, I think the blog post would flow easier.
Example:Kevin will not be able to go snowboarding tomorrow because he will have to attend work or you do not know what will happen tomorrow. I see what you are saying but it's worded funny because Kevin does know what he is doing tomorrow. He is working. I would just say he could be working but what happens at work could be anything.
Organization of ideas: I do feel that the author has great organization of the idea. The post is divided up into relatable parts that certainly helps make the posts easy to understand. The author strategically answers all the questions.
Did the author answer their question? Yes the author did answer their question. I agree that Kevin should go snowboarding if that is what he wants to do. He doesn't know, in the future, if he is guaranteed to have the same opportunity to go.
Did the author provide a concrete example that clearly illustrates their main point? Yes, I feel the author provided good examples that illustrates their main point. The wording (mentioned previously in the grammar errors) was a bit confusing at times but the example was solid in showing their question being explained.
How does the author's concrete example illustrate their main point? The author's example provided us an illustration of something that could happen to anybody in our everyday lives. We all have desires from day to day, whether it be food or going to do an activity. In their example they provided us with an individual who had a day off which we all get (school or work) and wanting/having the desire to do something with that time. The author shows that Kevin should give into his desire now instead of waiting so he did not miss out on the opportunity and the pleasure he would get from snowboarding.
Do I agree or disagree with the author's answer and why? Yes, I agree with the author's answer because I, too, believe that having a positive attitude and being happy by giving in to your desires (on a day to day basis) is better than missing out of the chance. The wondering "what if" is a lot worse than knowing you did what you wanted and were happy doing it. Basically, never miss out on an opportunity that will make you happy.
What is the concrete example that clearly illustrates why you agree or disagree with the author? “We do not have control over our future or what happens.” Therefore, going snowboarding when Kevin desired it, will give him pleasure by doing what he enjoys at the moment. That clearly illustrates the main point of this blog.My explanation on why I agree with this author's point is based on my grandmother. She was a really hard working women. Her children would always try to get her to take vacations and travel. My grandmother would always say wait until I retire. She continued to put off taking time off work to do what would have made her happy or given her some pleasure. When she retired her health was not as good and she still was not able to go on vacations with her kids. Unfortunately, she missed out on so many opportunities that could of made her happy because she was focused on what was needed to be done. She put her desires on hold and never got the opportunity to travel later in life.

  2. [Is it better to have pleasure when we desire [it] instead of waiting tomorrow? According to Aristippus, [I believe]←(Why is it that you believe this rather than know it? You have your text book as a source to find out.) it is better to have pleasure when we desire [it] because [we do know if it will be the same when we have it.]←(You need to provide source citation for this. Also, why would this be a reason for it being better to have pleasure we when desire, whatever that means?) [Single space, and make similar corrections throughout.] We need to live the present and not think about tomorrow since we do not know if tomorrow might come or not. You never know what will happen tomorrow. [“Only physical pleasure makes life exciting, dynamic, worth living. You should only use quoted material when providing textual support or when emphasizing a particular way that an author stated something. In other cases, you should paraphrase and provide a source citation. You should never let the quote do the explaining or use a quote as if it were your own words, even if you provide citation information. Also, your interpretation of what this passage suggests is not quite right. These passages are used to support the claim that occurrent physical pleasures are the best of all things.)

There are many examples that can clearly illustrate my answer to my question.
